How the New Deal benefits African Americans. This version is prepared from the holdings of the National Archives. It is higher quality than the version in the Prelinger Collection as the source was 35mm with substantially less scratches and dirt. It does appear to be a bit dark, and perhaps loses some detail as a result. NAIL: 69.6 ARC: 12322

FTR #301 Along with FTR-304, this program might be entitled "The Politics of Illusion." Few American cultural or artistic figures have come to be associated with wholesome, virtuous images as filmmaker and animation pioneer Walt Disney. In both cinema and television, Disney established himself as an American icon, and the merged corporation he left behind after his death is one of the giants of the media world. The reality behind Disney's civic and political life is very different...

Classic "capitalist realist" drama showing the manufacture of Chevrolets from foundry to finished vehicles. Though ostensibly a tribute to the "master hands" of the assembly line workers, it seems more of a paean to the designers of this impressive mass production system. Filmed in Flint, Michigan, just months before the United Auto Workers won union recognition with their famous sitdown strikes. Released the same year as two other films with which it shares similarities:...

This short film was a test for Edison's "Kinetophone" project, the first attempt in history to record sound and moving image in synchronization. This was an experiment by William Dickson to put sound and film together either in 1894 or 1895. Two men are operating a 'dog factory', using a device that they call a Dog Transformator. A man brings three dogs into their shop, which they purchase from him. They place the dogs one by one into the machine, which turns each dog into a string of sausages. As their customers come in, they are then able to select the kind of dog that they want, and the machine changes the corresponding string of sausages back into a dog.
